Sandy Springs Carriage House and Home Remodel.
Originally comissioned to design the carriage house addition, our scope for this project slowly evolved to include the interior architecture for the main home kitchen, master bathroom, and executive office. We were challenged to provide a two-story detached-carriage house that echoed the architectural language of the existing home, while aslo providing more generously sized spaces full of charm and detail. With the ground floor serving as a personal training gym and the second as a home office and guest suite, we took liberty to creat a strong central feature on the primary elevation to serve as the gym entry on the main level and office dormer with seating on the second floor. At this junction, we also incorporated a bracketed roof extension over the office entry with sconces to either side, which creates a lower, more intimate feel as you move into the space and circulate through the auto-court.
One of the more challenging aspects to this project was the grade change. To navigate the roughly 8’ of elevation change between the rear corner and auto-court side, we used the exterior walls of the gym to retain the higher lawn elevation. In doing so, that allowed for a walk-in entry to the second floor office, and an outdoor seating terrace that overlooks the lawn and pool area. Within the office, a small kitchenette with counter to ceiling windows wraps the corner of the room, bookshelves and a small window seat create a charming backdrop to the executive desk, and a lounge area with a sleeper sofa and chairs occupies the front dormer over the gym entry. The exterior materials pull from the existing architecture, though this addition brings an increased level of charm through the use of exposed rafter tails, wood brackets, sconces, and more sophisticated trim detailing.
